Khruangbin Celebrates Houston in LateNightTales Compilation

Described by the band as a “late at night … lighting a spliff kinda vibe,” the compilation spans decades and continents, but always returns home.

While every “Late Night Tales” guest mix is special, and I’m a fan of pretty much anything Simon Green (Bonobo) touches, I am particularly fond of the Bonobo LNT because it was the first time I heard Khruangbin. So, today’s announcement of Khruangbin’s very own LateNightTales album is some fantastic full circle news and I’m 100 percent here for it.

Khruangbin describes the album’s theme as having a “late at night … lighting a spliff kinda vibe,” and I don’t know who wouldn’t want a curated compilation that sounds like that.

They also show major love to their hometown of Houston.

“We wanted to show the treasures from our hometown, or people from our hometown that the rest of the world probably doesn’t know. That’s what makes Khruangbin, Khruangbin. The stubbornness about being so hometown-centric but what makes Houston is this constant international influence. That’s that gulf stream, bringing it right into Houston.”

The band’s song selections span continents and decades, but they always bring it back home. The mix ends with “a spoken word piece by Tierney Malone, accompanied by fellow Houstonian Geoffrey Muller’s atmospheric banjo rendering of Erik Satie’s ‘Gnossienne’,” according to the LNT website.

Khurangbin also shared an in-studio cover official studio version of Kool and the Gang’s “Summer Madness” today, which they have played live before but this version is a LNT exclusive.
