Composer and keyboardist Kwinton Gray on Janet Jackson, musical theater, and his love for Disney.
I hope y’all have as much fun listening to this episode as much as I had fun talking to Dallas-based musician Kwinton Gray. We talk about Kwinton’s diversified career thus far, from touring with a dance company and performing in theater productions (Hair, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) to playing keys for Janet Jackson. Also, he plays in like, four bands (at least) at any given time, and also manages to teach music classes to kids.
We dive deep into the genius of Disney (“It’s about songwriting and storytelling,” he says), the awesomeness of “Hamilton,” guilty pleasure songs, influential film composers, ’90s nostalgia, and oh-so-much more! We’ve got a ton of show notes for this episode (see below). I also highly recommend the latest Kwinton Gray Project livestream.
At the end of the episode, Kwinton mentions Ashleigh Smith’s “In the Rain,” which he co-wrote, and which you might have heard on SiriusXM’s Watercolors.
