DJ EZ Eddie D is an old-school Dallas icon and host of the longest running hip-hop radio show in the world.
He’s also a DJ, with a vinyl collection comprising roughly 8,000 records that ranges from Curtis Mayfield and Billie Holiday to Skinny Puppy and Jefferson Starship. We get into some tricks of the trade in terms of DJing, from blending vs. scratching to sampling. Eddie talks about becoming friends with Erykah Badu in the ’80s, the state of rap and hip-hop today, and how he got his stage name (his real name is Eddie Murphy). Eddie is an OG of the Texas music scene and he’s got some great stories.
His weekly show “Knowledge Dropped, Lessons Taught” airs Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. CST on KNON 89.3. Listen to previous episodes on the KNON app. If you’re in Dallas, you can catch him spinning at Whitehall Exchange and Tacos y Vino (listen to the episode for specific dates/times).
